Cyberattack Risks Grow

The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board has issued a warning about a new wave of cyberattacks that are using unconventional approaches, after a quick increase in reported cyberattacks. Notorious hackers have begun targeting individuals by breaking into their devices and collecting sensitive information.

The warning specifies that VPNs, ChatGPT, and Gemini browser extensions pose the greatest threat. The warning mentioned several well-known websites, including Facebook and other Pakistani financial services, in addition to browser extensions.

The advisory highlighted 16 common extensions as being particularly vulnerable to hackers’ new efforts, which could lead to data theft and other damaging incursions. These extensions include AI Assistant, Bard AI Chat Extension, GPT 4 Summary with OpenAI, Search CoPilot AI Assistant for Chrome, Wayin AI, VPNCity, Internet VPN, Vidniz Flex Video Recorder, VidHelper Video Downloader, Bookmark Favicon Changer, UVoice, Reader Mode, Parrot Talks, Primus, Trackker, and AI Shop Buddy.

Artificial intelligence assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and OpenAI’s GPT-4 for Chrome browser are prominent examples of websites and add-ons that contain malware and phishing baits. Internet users are strongly encouraged to steer clear of the free websites and browser extensions that were highlighted in the advice. They should instead choose safer options. Users are advised to install only licensed and dependable extensions and to regularly update them.
