Apple recently introduced intelligent categories to the Mail app on its mobile platform, designed to keep inboxes organized and make discovering relevant content easier. However, this feature was not available on Macs. That is about to change, as a report suggests that Mail categories will soon appear on the desktop client.
The change is expected to arrive with the macOS 15.4 update. Apple recently released the third beta of macOS 15.3, indicating that a test build of macOS 15.4 is still a few weeks away.
The categories feature sorts emails into four classes: Primary for personal communication and time-sensitive emails, Promotions for sales and deals, Updates for social and news content, and Transactions for shopping-related alerts. Users can change the email category for any sender in their inbox if they find it useful. If the system is not working as expected, users can turn it off by switching to the classic List view.
The Mail app on Mac already features some AI-driven capabilities, including Smart Reply, Priority Messages, email summarization, and summary previews. Another notable feature is Writing Tools, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT stack, which allows users to compose, refine, rewrite, proofread, and reorganize text content.
The email categorization system has received a mixed reaction from users. While it helps keep inboxes organized, some users have reported functional issues and are looking for ways to go back to the old format. The system has been criticized for being rigid and not allowing users to create custom categories.
Before the feature is rolled out to Macs, Apple still has time to assess user feedback and fix any existing issues. If the report is true, the macOS 15.4 update will bring the categorization system to the Mail client on Macs, potentially improving the user experience.
