YTL AI Labs has unveiled the launch of Ilmu 0.1, a Malaysian-made Large Language Model (LLM) designed to cater specifically to the needs of the Malaysian population. The announcement was made during the official launch of the National AI Office by the Ministry of Digital. Ilmu 0.1 is a milestone achievement for Malaysia, as it is built to understand Bahasa Melayu, the national language, and reflects the unique cultural and contextual nuances of Malaysia.

The model has been benchmarked against the Malay MMLU, an internationally recognized standard for assessing the performance of LLMs in the Malay language. According to the benchmark results, Ilmu 0.1 has outperformed other global LLMs in several key categories, demonstrating superior accuracy in understanding and processing the Malay language. The model is not only impressive in its linguistic capabilities but also has a strong grasp of Malaysia’s cultural nuances, making it highly relevant for local applications across various industries.

One of the key highlights of Ilmu 0.1’s capabilities is its success in passing Malaysia’s national PT3 and SPM exams, which are designed to assess students’ proficiency in the Malay language. This achievement underscores Ilmu 0.1’s potential to support a wide range of local use cases, from education and healthcare to finance and public services. The successful performance of the model in these exams further validates its deep understanding of the Malay language and its ability to process complex local contexts.

The launch of Ilmu 0.1 has been described as a significant milestone for Malaysia’s development in the field of artificial intelligence. The model is seen as a critical tool for advancing AI applications that are tailored to the needs of Malaysia’s diverse population. By focusing on a language model specifically built for Bahasa Melayu, YTL AI Labs aims to bridge the gap between global technological advancements and local requirements. This, in turn, is expected to accelerate the adoption of AI across industries and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

The development of Ilmu 0.1 is part of a broader strategy by YTL AI Labs to position Malaysia as a key player in the global AI landscape. Last year, YTL AI Labs entered into a strategic partnership with Nvidia to bring cutting-edge technology to Malaysia, including the latest NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. This partnership aims to build a world-class AI infrastructure in Malaysia, providing the necessary computing power to support the growing demand for scalable and high-performance AI solutions.

YTL AI Labs has committed to investing heavily in AI development, with a focus on creating a robust ecosystem that supports both local and international AI research and applications. As part of this initiative, the company has established a 1,640-acre data center facility in Johor, Malaysia, known as the YTL Green Data Center Campus. This facility is powered by renewable energy from a 500MW solar power plant, making it one of the most sustainable data centers in the region. The strategic location of the center, close to major network interconnection points in Singapore, positions Malaysia as an attractive hub for AI and tech innovation.

The launch of Ilmu 0.1 also reflects Malaysia’s growing ambition to become a regional leader in AI. YTL AI Labs has expressed its commitment to working closely with the Malaysian government to build a thriving AI ecosystem and establish Malaysia as an “AI Nation.” This includes developing a sovereign AI cloud and a sovereign LLM, which would enable Malaysia to maintain control over its AI technologies and ensure that they are aligned with the country’s unique needs and values.

As part of its vision, YTL AI Labs has made an investment of over RM 20 billion in Malaysia’s AI sector, signaling its long-term commitment to the country’s digital future. The company envisions Malaysia becoming a central hub for AI innovation in Southeast Asia, with world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and a highly skilled workforce. This vision is expected to create high-quality job opportunities and contribute to the overall economic development of the country.
