Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com, has announced plans to establish a new infrastructure region in Taiwan by early 2025. This strategic move aims to meet the rising demand for cloud services in the Asia-Pacific region and further strengthen AWS’s global infrastructure.

The forthcoming AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will feature three Availability Zones, adding to AWS’s extensive network of 105 Availability Zones across 33 geographic regions. Each Availability Zone is designed to be isolated and geographically separate, with independent power, cooling, and physical security, ensuring high availability and resilience for AWS customers.

AWS’s investment in Taiwan is substantial, with plans to inject billions of dollars into the region over the next 15 years. This investment is expected to stimulate the growth of related industry chains, create high-quality employment opportunities, and advance sustainable development initiatives. AWS’s presence will provide local and international enterprises, educational institutions, entertainment, financial services, and nonprofit organizations with more options for running applications and serving end-users from Taiwan-based data centers.

AWS’s commitment to Taiwan began in 2014 with the launch of two Amazon CloudFront edge locations. Over the years, AWS expanded its footprint with AWS Direct Connect locations, AWS Outposts, and AWS Local Zones in Taipei. These services have provided Taiwanese businesses with secure, low-latency cloud solutions.

Cathay Financial Holdings (CFH), Chunghwa Telecom, Gamania, and KKCompany Technologies are among the many Taiwanese organizations already leveraging AWS’s robust cloud infrastructure. The new region will further support their digital transformation efforts, offering enhanced stability, security, and scalability.

In addition to its technological advancements, AWS is dedicated to sustainability. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040 and plans to match all electricity used with 100% renewable energy by 2025. AWS’s initiatives also include water-positive goals, aiming to return more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations by 2030.

AWS’s expansion into Taiwan is part of a broader strategy to enhance its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Following significant investments in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, AWS continues to lead the cloud infrastructure services market with a 31% market share, outpacing competitors like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
