Kaspersky, a global cybersecurity company, has revealed that its security solutions detected and blocked over 13 million web threats targeting businesses in Southeast Asia (SEA) from January to December 2023. This marks a 31% increase from the threats detected in 2020. On average, cybercriminals launched 36,552 online attacks daily against businesses in the region last year.
Web-based threats, or online threats, pose significant risks via the internet, exploiting vulnerabilities in end-users, web service developers/operators, or the web services themselves. These threats can cause considerable damage to both individuals and organizations.
The breakdown of threats by country for 2022 and 2023 is as follows:
- Indonesia: Decreased from 6,418,588 in 2022 to 4,968,729 in 2023
- Malaysia: Decreased from 1,820,437 in 2022 to 1,539,905 in 2023
- Philippines: Increased from 492,567 in 2022 to 1,691,167 in 2023
- Singapore: Increased from 889,093 in 2022 to 1,653,726 in 2023
- Thailand: Increased from 1,232,311 in 2022 to 1,531,430 in 2023
- Vietnam: Decreased from 2,485,168 in 2022 to 1,956,618 in 2023
The Philippines experienced a dramatic 243% increase in web threats, with 1,691,167 incidents recorded in 2023 compared to 492,567 in 2022. Singapore also saw a significant rise, with threats increasing by 86% from 889,093 in 2022 to 1,653,726 in 2023. Thailand faced a 24% increase, with threats rising from 1,232,311 in 2022 to 1,531,430 in 2023.
These figures are based on Kaspersky’s business-to-business (B2B) products installed in businesses of various sizes across the region.
Economic growth and the rapid digitalisation of key markets in Southeast Asia have contributed to the rise in web threats. Governments in the region are enhancing their policies to foster digital economies and infrastructure, making it crucial for local businesses to strengthen their cyber defences to harness the benefits of digitalisation.
A recent study highlighted that 28% of businesses in SEA recognize that their digitalisation efforts have increased their exposure to cyberattacks. Additionally, 16% of respondents reported increased external pressure to disclose cyber incidents and comply with cybersecurity practices.
To help businesses in SEA build on their cyber defences, Kaspersky has launched in new enterprise portfolio dubbed as Kaspersky Next.
