Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), through its branch campus UniKL British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on academic and research initiatives focused on smart city technology and urban disaster prevention. This partnership also includes various other activities and programs aimed at driving technological innovation.

A key feature of this collaboration is the establishment of a Huawei Intelligent Operation Center (IOC) at UniKL BMI. This center will provide research and development (R&D) opportunities and enable UniKL to offer authorized short-course training to both students and the public. The aim is to foster technological innovation and practical training in smart city technologies.

Additionally, Huawei Malaysia and UniKL will exchange academic and research information, specifically focusing on flood monitoring control. This exchange underscores their commitment to addressing urban disaster prevention and enhancing city governance.

The MoU signing ceremony took place during Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Bin Hamidi’s visit to Huawei’s Headquarters in Shenzhen, China. The agreement was signed by Huawei Malaysia’s CEO Simon Sun and UniKL’s President and CEO, Associate Professor Ir Dr. Azman Senin.

UniKL, a higher learning institution wholly owned by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, has been collaborating with Huawei Malaysia since 2012 when UniKL became a Huawei University Teaching Laboratory. The primary goal of this latest collaboration is to strengthen, promote, and develop capacity-building cooperation based on equality and mutual benefit.

This partnership marks a significant step towards advancing smart city technology and improving disaster prevention capabilities, highlighting the shared commitment of Huawei Malaysia and UniKL to technological innovation and societal progress.
