Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) to support Johor Digital Economy Centre (JDEC)

Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“Huawei”) today inked a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with JIOS Academy Sdn Bhd (“JIOS Academy”) to jointly support digital initiatives spearheaded by the Johor Digital Economy Centre (JDEC), which was launched today.

Through this collaboration, both parties will work together to plan, develop, and implement innovative digital solutions to enhance and upgrade businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Johor, by leveraging Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies provided by Huawei.

Huawei will take on the role as Technology Partner and Advisor, while JIOS Academy will be Project Owner and Content Provider.

This strategic collaboration will also drive the adoption of AI and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions within Johor. This is in line with the state’s vision to transform the state into a Smart City with a digital-first government, via JDEC.

The areas in which Huawei and JIOS Academy have agreed to collaborate on include the following:

  1. Both parties shall jointly explore, develop, integrate and commercialise vertical solutions using Cloud AI technologies and commercialise the solutions to drive digital adoption among enterprise customers in the Johor State
  2. Both parties shall jointly create talent development programmes using Cloud and AI technologies, targeting enterprises in the Johor State. One of the main objectives of this collaboration is to boost the competency of SMEs to adopt and/or innovate ICT in their businesses.

Signing the MoC on behalf of Huawei was Lim Chee Siong, the company’s Vice President for the Cloud and AI business division, while signing on behalf of the JIOS Group was the Deputy CEO, Tyu Yee Siong.

“By leveraging Huawei’s breadth of expertise and depth of knowledge in Cloud and AI technologies, both parties will be able to develop innovative digital solutions as well as nurture digital talent, to effectively drive state-wide digital transformation,” said Mr Lim.

“As a leader in cloud and AI technologies, Huawei is committed towards developing creative solutions to fulfil technology gaps. We believe that it is our duty to lend our capabilities and be a catalyst for not only the Johor state, but Malaysia’s overall digital economic growth,” added Lim.

“Information technology is yesterday and digital economy is now. We should adopt digital skills such as data analysis, business intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in our current workplace so that our workforce are equipped with such skills that can transform the workplace in line with the digital age,” said JIOS Group CEO Liew Jong Tau.

“At JIOS, we strive to be a digital economy enabler for Malaysian SMEs,” said Liew.

Huawei and JIOS Academy will also establish a Joint Working Group to oversee and ensure the smooth execution of the initiatives sought out through the MoC.

JDEC, which is an initiative of the Johor state government, was set up to develop Johor as a regional e-commerce trading hub, and to accelerate digital transformation for local businesses, as well as nurture domestic talents.

Also present at the virtual signing ceremony were Johor Menteri Besar YB Datuk Haji Hasni bin Mohammad; Head of Huawei Cloud Malaysia Tan Kuan Thye; JIOS Group CEO Liew Jong Tau; and JIOS Group Deputy CEO Edmond Lim Yi Zhi.
