HP 17z Laptop Review: 17.3-Inch Laptop With 8GB Memory and AMD Dual-Core Processor

Does it seem too good to be true that a 17.3-inch, AMD dual-core powered laptop with 8GB+ memory be available for a VERY low price? It really isn’t; the HP 17z does come with all of these features. First released in 2015, it has got a lot of praise and rewards for its quality and performance. Consumers can also select the touchscreen option (Pavilion).

While a 17-inch laptop isn’t the lightest, it can still be carried around if you go on vacation or a business trip. The standard, non-Pavilion version weighs 5.62-lbs and measures 15.34-inches in width, 0.97-inches in height, and 10.94 inches in depth.

The wireless communication between it and the router is handled by 802.11 b-g-n (1×1); add ac compatibility and Bluetooth 4.2 as well if you need it. According to HP 17z tests, the signal quality is good at a distance of up to ten meters from the router and through 3 or 4 walls.

The particular model is available in different colors: Smoke Gray, Silk Gold, Jet Black, and Natural Silver. An integrated numeric keyboard is built-in with the island-style, full-size keyboard. Since the keys are spaced an ideal amount apart, typing is easy and accurate. The stroke is absorbed decently to allow smooth typing. Overall, this is a nicely designed notebook on the inside and out. It features a chrome plated hinge and unique textures.

The starter configuration of the HP 17z laptop includes the following:

• AMD dual-core processor (A9 9420 APU) 3GHz – 3.6GHz with burst frequency

• AMD Radeon graphics R5 or 530

• 17.3-inch display diagonal HD+ SVA WLED backlit BrightView with 1600×900 resolution

• 1 x 8GB memory SDRAM DDR4 1866

• Hard drive: 1TB SATA 5400-RPM

• DVD writer optical drive

HP 17z Upgrade Options

The memory is expandable: add a second module (either 4GB or 8GB) and go up to 12GB or 16GB. If you want something faster than a 5400RPM SATA, there is a M.2 SSD slot, which allows a Solid State Drive (up to 256GB) to be installed.

While viewing game graphics, images and videos on a large BrightView display, you can also enjoy quality audio with the HP 17z via DTS technology and a dual speaker setup.

With the HD+ panel model, get up to 7 hours of battery life during general tasks, and up to 6 hours of runtime during video playback. There are a good number of external ports for data transfer, charging, and so forth: 1 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.1 (gen. 1), 1 HDMI (for connecting to a second display), 1 headphone and microphone jack, and 1 RJ-45.

While it might not be as powerful as a higher-end gaming laptop, the HP 17z still offers a lot more power and speed than other laptops in its price range.

Whether you want this model or its Pavilion counterpart, be sure to look over HP 17z coupon offers to see if a good deal is available. HP discounts are almost always generous, so make sure you use one when placing your order.
