Microsoft has recently announced that some specific Windows 10 versions will continue to receive updates due to the challenges that organizations face these days due to the ongoing health crisis.
Because many administrators are working from home, upgrading entire fleets of devices to newer Windows 10 versions might be more difficult, so Microsoft is extending the life of some releases specifically to provide everyone with more time to complete the migration.
Windows 10 version 1709 was originally supposed to reach the end of support for Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise on April 14, but Microsoft says it will now continue to ship updates until October 13, 2020.
Furthermore, Windows 10 version 1809, which for home users was projected to be discontinued next month, will get updates for Home, Pro, Pro for Education, Pro for Workstations, and IoT Core until November 10, 2020.
“In addition, we are temporarily pausing Microsoft initiated feature updates for Home and Pro editions running on version 1809. The rollout process restart for Microsoft-initiated feature updates for devices running on Windows 10, version 1809 will be dramatically slowed and closely monitored in advance of the delayed November 10, 2020 end of service date to provide adequate time for a smooth update process,” Microsoft announces.
New Windows 10 feature update next month
Windows Server version 1809 was also projected to be retired next month, but updates will now continue to be provided until November 10, 2020.
Other products, like Configuration Manager version 18010, SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2010, Project Server 2010, Dynamics 365 cloud services, and Basic Authentication have also been updated with new servicing dates.
In the meantime, Microsoft is now giving the finishing touches to a new Windows 10 feature update that was originally projected to launch next month. The company hasn’t yet disclosed any change in timing, so there’s a chance the rollout would begin as planned with the first wave of devices in May.
