The dock has been there from the very beginning on the iPhone, and truth be told, it hasn’t evolved too much throughout the years.

And yet, this doesn’t necessarily mean users don’t expect more options for the dock – as a matter of fact, one of the most popular jailbreak tweaks allows iPhone owners to enable five or even more icons in the dock, something that Apple doesn’t allow by default.

And while the Cupertino-based tech giant doesn’t say a single thing about changes coming to the iOS dock, a concept published recently by Alessandro Chiarlitti (aesign on Instagram), imagine a new version with multiple docks.

Basically, the concept proposes a swipe up gesture that launches a second dock replacing the default one – for example, there’s an Apple Music dock, which is essentially a now playing widget, that can take the place of the standard dock on the home screen.

Widgets in iOS 14

At first glance, this more or less reminds of Microsoft Launcher on Android, which allows users to expand the default dock with a swipe up gesture to reveal more icons.

This new approach, however, replaces the standard dock completely, and users should be allowed to further customize this feature with the icons they use the most.

iOS 14 is projected to go live in the fall, with a preview expected to be presented at the WWDC in June. iOS 14 will include a series of major changes, including widgets, which would support pinning to the home screen. At this point, however, it’s still not clear how these widgets would be implemented in iOS 14, especially as Apple could further enhance this feature with additional options, such as the idea that this concept proposes.

It remains to be see if and how widgets make their way to iOS 14, but for now, a confirmation from Apple does not exist.
