Apple first announced its AirPower wireless charging mat in September 2017, when it promised the company would ship the device next year.
At that point, the AirPower just seemed to be a product that made total sense for Apple, as it allowed charging its flagship products, namely the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and the AirPods, all at the same time.
So for someone that was truly committed to the Apple ecosystem, getting an AirPower was something that turned charging all these devices into a much more convenient process.
But Apple decided to hold back on the release of the AirPower, so in March 2019, it officially canceled the product for good, which essentially means we’re not supposed to get a wireless charging mat from Apple anymore. While there are plenty of alternatives out there, Apple just was no longer interested in building one.
Rumor had it the company experienced issues with heat management and interference, something that Apple’s big honchos believed was too much of a headache to go forward with the AirPower.
Back on the drawing board
Since then, however, people familiar with the matter said on several occasions that Apple was still looking into launching the AirPower before others claimed the project was once again abandoned.
And now Jon Prosser, who has a good track on Apple scoops, says the AirPower is back on the table once again, with a prototype being built as we speak. And unsurprisingly, one of the areas where Apple’s particularly focusing is the heat management.
“AirPower isn’t dead. The project is back on, internally. No guarantee that they’ll finalize and release it, but they haven’t given up yet and they’re trying to re-engineer the coils to displace heat more effectively. Prototyping is underway,” he posted on Twitter.
Of course, Apple has remained completely tight-lipped on this project, and we shouldn’t expect the company to say a single word about it. As for when it’s supposed to go live, this is something that’s not even worth guessing given how the AirPower has so far been on and off so many times.
