Hot on the heels of its participation in the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) undertaken by the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in Langkawi, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) continues to expand its 5G network, bringing the advanced infrastructure to its headquarters, Menara TM here in Kuala Lumpur. With the expansion, Menara TM is now 5G ready and will be able to deliver 5G services to more Malaysians.
Commenting on this achievement, Dato’ Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM said: “After we successfully deployed our 5G use cases in Langkawi and Subang Jaya recently under the 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) undertaken by MCMC, I’m excited to update that our headquarters Menara TM has now also been equipped with the 5G network. This initiative is testament to our commitment to progressively deploy our converged 5G core network towards accelerating the delivery of 5G services nationwide for the benefit of the nation and all Malaysians. Our focus this year is to become 5G-ready in adapting to the coinciding rise in mobile connectivity, IoT, cloud services and smart devices. Before the spectrum becomes available in the later part of this year, we are preparing ourselves through full-fledged 5G live trials via the 5GDP whilst continuously upgrading our core network. As the national telecommunications infrastructure provider of Malaysia’s Digital Nation aspirations, we have established the communications backbone of Malaysia with the widest connectivity and convergence network. We will also continue to lay the foundation for Industrial Revolution 4.0 and rolling out 5G nationwide – serving a more digital society and lifestyle, digital businesses and industry verticals, as well as digital Government, towards improving the quality of lives of the Rakyat.”
TM, together with its enterprise and public sector business solutions arm – TM ONE, as well as its innovation arm – TM R&D Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), are currently running full-fledged 5G live trials by participating in the 5GDP undertaken by MCMC in Subang Jaya, Selangor and Pulau Langkawi, Kedah. As the industry gears up for the next wave of infrastructure investments to support 5G use cases and as demand for mobile broadband is increasing, the Group is actively testing new 5G features, exploring 5G technology via 5G-enabled smart solutions and use cases as well as assessing the best way to deploy 5G infrastructure nationwide. Through TM’s 5GDP, the Group recorded a number of firsts for itself and the country in the region. TM is the first Telco in the world to deploy 700 MHz and C-Band (3.5 GHz) on Standalone (SA) dedicated 5G network simultaneously. SA is the future of the 5G network deployment and this demonstration is crucial to fast track 5G implementation in the country. TM is also the first in the country to establish a 5G Command Centre (5GCC) in Langkawi, deployed 5G Core Network (5GC), 700MHz and 3.5 GHz SA dedicated 5G network and a 5G Centralised Radio Access Network (RAN). The Company has also successfully achieved 1.5Gbps for 5G speed tests conducted within its 5G use cases sites. Via 5GDP, TM has equipped Langkawi with 5G, making it the first Smart Tourism Island in the world.
