Apple is projected to take the wraps off the iPhone 12 in “just” 9 months, and while at first glance this might seem a lot, it’s really not when it comes to the unveiling of a product that requires so much researching and planning before finalizing all details.

While it’s impossible to determine how advanced the development of iPhone 12 currently is, photos of what appears to be a dummy mockup for the upcoming models are already making the headlines, promising to provide us with an early look at the new iPhone.

Certainly, we really shouldn’t take these for granted, and Japanese site Macotakara emphasizes the mockup was found on Alibaba, which is more often than not the first indication that a healthy dose of skepticism is required.

iPhone 4 edges

At first glance, if this leak is indeed real, iPhone 12 could look a lot like the iPhone 4, especially when viewed from the side. The mockup uses straight sides instead of the curved edges used on the latest-generation iPhone and its predecessors.

However, the straight sides have long been the thing iPhone users loved the most about the iPhone 4, especially because it provided additional grip when held in hand, while also making it a lot easier to lift the device from a flat surface.

On the other hand, when viewed from the front, this alleged iPhone 12 looks a lot like the iPhone 11 Pro, and this isn’t necessarily surprising. One small detail, however, is that the mockup points to a 6.5-inch display, while all the previous leaks on the iPhone screen dimensions suggested an increase to 6.7 inches.

For now, this mockup is pretty much all we have on the iPhone 12 in terms of photo leaks, but again, it’s important to take with a healthy pinch of salt, at least until more reliable sources come up with their own renders.
