iPhone 11 Displays Lock Screen Notifications If Non-Genuine Displays Are Used

The new-generation iPhone comes with updated super-powers, and in addition to the already existing capability of detecting replaced batteries, they can now tell when the device is using a non-genuine display.

And if this happens, the iPhone starts issues warning after warning to tell you that your iPhone’s display doesn’t come from Apple, with the Cupertino-based tech giant sharing all details of this new behavior in a support document on its site.

Specifically, Apple says that a non-genuine display could lead to all kinds of issues, especially when iOS updates are shipped with display improvements. These problems can include not responding multi-touch, accidental edge or palm touches, broken True Tone, battery drain, and incorrect display calibration.

Only new models showing the warning

And because Apple doesn’t want you to think that the iPhone is at fault for all these problems, the device will let you know that a non-genuine display is being used.

This feature is available on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, with the notification reading:

“Important Display Message. Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display.”

The notification will stay on your lock screen for a total of 4 days, after which it’s moved to the Settings app. The warning will be displayed at the top of the Settings screen for 15 days, and then it’s transferred to Settings > General > About.

“Replacements not performed by Apple, authorized service providers, or certified technicians might not follow proper safety and repair procedures and could result in improper function or issues with display quality or safety. Apple displays are designed to fit precisely within the device. Additionally, repairs that don’t properly replace screws or cowlings might leave behind loose parts that could damage the battery, cause overheating, or result in injury,” Apple explains.

iPhone 11 uses an LCD screen, while iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max both use OLED. Beginning with the 2020 generation, all three iPhones are expected to make the switch to OLED.
