Spotify has released a lighter version of its app specifically for markets with slow Internet connections and where mobile phone customers typically purchase low-end devices with limited storage.

Called Spotify Lite, the app is available for download on Android in a total of 36 countries, and Spotify says that it will continue to add more markets to the list in the coming months.

You can find the full list of countries where Spotify Lite is currently available in the box after the jump.

Spotify Lite is available for both free and premium subscriptions, and it requires at least Android 4.3. It is only 10 MB in size, so it can be easily installed on devices were only 16 GB of storage space is available.

Needless to say, it also comes with some feature limitations, but the essential functionality is still there, letting users search for and play their favorite songs and artists.

Android 4.3 and newer supported

Users can also clear the cache to free up space on their devices, and Spotify Lite can even be installed on Android alongside the main Spotify app, so it can be used in areas with a poor Internet connection.

“Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience — especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage,” says Kalle Persson, Senior Product Manager at Spotify.

Spotify Lite has spent more than a year in a testing program, and it comes with a dedicated feature that allows users to configure how much bandwidth it can use. Furthermore, whenever that limit is reached, the app sends a notification to the user to make sure that the data plan isn’t maxed out.

Spotify hasn’t provided any specifics as to when the company could release Spotify Lite on the iPhone.
