Apple is reportedly planning to kick off a repair program for the MacBook Air after it discovered an issue with the main logic board on what it describes as a “very small number” of units.
While Cupertino has remained tight-lipped on this repair program, internal documents that the company shared with Apple Store staff (via 9to5mac) indicate that Apple came across an issue potentially causing power problems.
No specifics are provided on these power errors, but Apple wants to kick off the repair program and perform the servicing at no cost. The main logic board will be replaced on all faulty models, the documents indicate.
Apple to email affected customers
However, details on the impacted devices are not included in the documents shared with Apple Store staff, albeit the company does say that it will reach out to customers of these MacBooks via email. Buyers can also head over to the nearest Apple Store to have their MacBook Air models checked for any issues affecting the main logic board.
Because the repair program is yet to be announced officially, a list of the serial numbers that would indicate what MacBook Air models are affected isn’t available at the time of publishing this article. Apple hasn’t updated its Exchange and Repair Extensions Program page either.
Apple says only the 13-inch MacBook Air with Retina suffer from this main logic board problem, and the program will include models that are four years old or newer.
The most recent recall program announced by Apple concerns the batteries in the 15-inch MacBook Pro, which according to the company could overheat and pose a fire safety risk. In this case, models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 are concerned, with a serial number verification tool available on the official page of the program.
