A new chief executive officer (CEO) for Telekom Malaysia (TM) has been appointed, Malaysia Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed today after reports of a delay and alleged stalemate over the appointment.
According to media reports, Dr Mahathir declined to name person, however, but offered that it was not the current acting CEO Imri Mokhtar.
“He has been appointed. I don’t think, they have not announced yet, but I think he has been appointed,” he told reporters at the prime minister’s official residence here during the Hari Raya open house, MalayMail reported.
Over the past week, there has been a number of reports if Imri Mokhtar would be the next CEO of Telekom Malaysia.
Three possible candidates for the CEO position are rumoured being considered. They are believed to be Burhanuddin Yusof (formerly from Celcom Axiata), Noor Kamarul Anuar Nuruddin (formerly Celcom Axiata’s CTO) and Dr Farid Mohamad Sani, TM‘s current director representing Khazanah Nasional Bhd.
According to The Edge, it was alleged that TM chairman Rosli Man had refused to proceed with the appointment of acting CEO Imri as its CEO.
Rosli was further quoted as stating that he had received a request from the Prime Minister’s Office to defer the appointment of the group’s CEO.
The decision to appoint Imri was made by its special shareholder, The Minister of Finance Inc (MoF Inc).
There are no official announcement from Telekom Malaysia (TM) yet.
Note: The official announcement from TM would probably take a while as its the holidays. In my opinion, TM Corp Comm team lead by Izlyn Ramli are normally pretty slow at doing their job even during the normal working days. So the confirmation may take while. Hopefully Unifi services don’t go on holidays as well.
