SHAH ALAM, 9 August 2016 – Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“Digi”) today is calling all Malaysian secondary schoolchildren aged 13 to 18, to take part in the ‘Be Smart, Use Heart’ video contest. Focusing on Cyberbullying, this year’s competition will start from now until 15th September.

The ‘Be Smart, Use Heart’ video contest is a CyberSAFE in Schools initiative that requires participants to develop and submit a self-interview YouTube video of not more than one minute. The video can be an idea, a solution or even a personal experience related to digital citizenship and cyberbullying.

Philip Ling, Digi’s Programme Manager for CyberSAFE , said, “The Digi CyberSAFETM in Schools Programme is committed to creating greater awareness and capacity building on digital safety and citizenship. With 37% of school students in Malaysia encountering or previously involved with cyberbullying, we believe the theme for the competition is relevant to the Malaysian youths of today.”

“We are looking for passionate young people who want to be changemakers in the digital world, youths who have practical ideas on how to deal with issues such as Cyberbullying and in addition, to being able to articulate and deliver these impactful messages for greater peer to peer influence. We believe having a creative platform such as this video challenge can be a great outlet to hear the voices of the children to exercise their rights and express their opinions with regards to being smart online and being kind as responsible digital citizens” added Ling.

The winners of the ‘Be Smart, Use Heart’ video contest will be announced by the end of September 2016 with the prize giving to be held at Anugerah Pembestarian to be held at the Auditorium of Bahagian Teknologi Pendidikan in October 2016. A panel of judges comprising Digi’s Communication and Sustainability Department will review all the video submissions and will select the top three. The best video submission will have the opportunity to walk away with a grand prize of RM500 while the first and second runner-ups will receive RM300 and RM200 respectively. The winners and some of the best entries will also get an opportunity to join Digi’s inaugural Digital Citizenship Camp for young leaders to be held end September.

CyberSAFE in Schools programme, which started in 2011, is a joint initiative with the Ministry of Education Malaysia, CyberSecurity Malaysia and Digi to improve awareness, build capacity and empower students and teachers with digital resiliency and citizenship skills to stay safe on the internet. Through a series of workshops and trainings, the programme engages schoolchildren, teachers and parents to help children learn about safe online practices and positive digital citizenship.
