The Compute Stick – an Intel Atom powered 4-inch long plug-and-play device which transforms any HDMI display (such as a TV) into a computer – has been making waves around the world since its debut and continued to impress at the event, Intel said.

The Compute Stick itself comes in two flavors. The most popular one is going to be the pricier version running 32-bit Windows 8.1 with Bing (Intel STCK1A32WFC). This one packs a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F (up to 1.3Ghz), 2GB of DDR3/1333 memory, Intel HD Graphics, MicroSD card slot, Intel HD Audio via HDMI, a single USB 2.0 slot and 32GB of eMMC storage, plus integrated 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. The device would require a keyboard and mouse to work. Intel Malaysia did not disclose the recommended retail pricing at press time, but it is expected to sell for RM599.

There is also a Linux version (Intel STCK1A8LFC) with similar specification running Ubuntu, but it cuts main memory down to 1GB and storage to 8GB. The Ubuntu version is expected to be priced at RM499.

The device is expected to be available in Malaysia soon and gradually rolled out across the region in the coming months.

“What we’re unveiling today is a culmination of the work we’ve built on a foundation laid down by 50 years of Moore’s Law. In fact, the Intel Compute Stick was a brainchild of local engineers here in Intel Malaysia and we are extremely proud of having brought this game changing idea to fruition,” said Sumner Lemon, Country Manager, Intel Malaysia and Singapore.

“The Intel Compute Stick provides the functionality of a full-fledged desktop computer without taking up the space of one. It will open up a whole new world of computing for its users – be it those who work in small offices, those who compute on the go, or those looking to upgrade their smart living room setups.” he added.
