Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad, Malaysia’s largest Chinese language publisher, has deployed Fortinet’s FortiGate network security platform to protect its network against growing online threats, improve business continuity and enable bring-your-own-device (BYOD) among its staff.

Sin Chew Media is one of Malaysia’s most established publishers, owning titles like its flagship Sin Chew Daily − the largest-selling Chinese language newspaper outside Greater China − Guang Ming Daily and various Chinese language magazines. Sin Chew Media has 53 news bureaus and six printing plants in Peninsular and East Malaysia.

“As a news outlet, we are at the forefront of the Internet and attract our fair share of attackers from around the world,” said Ong Kee Wah, ICT Manager of Sin Chew Media. “As the number and sophistication of threats continue to grow, we see an urgent need to bolster our defences.”

“Fortinet’s solutions help us meet our three biggest business challenges − ensure service availability of critical business systems, safeguard business continuity and prevent data theft. On a daily operations level, the appliances’ abilities to intelligently analyse traffic and facilitate quick response through their Dynamic DNS and RBL features were especially important.”

With the FortiGate network security platform, Sin Chew Media benefits from a full range of security functionalities, including firewall, IPS, VPN, antivirus, Web filtering, antispam and application control. The appliances’ latest FortiOS 5.2 operating system, which features a new deep flow advanced malware engine, enhanced client behavioural analysis and easier configuration of firewall policies, is also helping the firm ward off advanced persistent threats (APTs), zero-day attacks and other sophisticated malware. In addition, FortiOS 5.2 secures and optimises mobile device usage by closely controlling the network, applications and user behaviour.

Following the deployment of the new FortiGate appliances at its branch offices, Sin Chew Media experienced a 40 percent drop in the number of security incidents, enabling it to run its business confidently and free up scarce IT manpower for strategic tasks. By providing fast, secure and dependable VPN communication between HQ and the branch offices, Fortinet’s solutions also improved the company’s business efficiency, it  said.
