In 2011, MDeC’s mandate was broadened by the Prime Minister to include driving Malaysia’s transition towards a developed digital economy by 2020 through Digital Malaysia. In 2012, Digital Malaysia was officially unveiled as the national transformation programme to achieve this aim.

Founded on three strategic thrusts, Digital Malaysia will create an ecosystem that promotes the pervasive use of ICT in all aspects of the economy, connect communities globally and enable them to interact in real time, to increase the country’s Gross National Income, enhance business productivity and improve standards of living.

1. Overview of Digital Malaysia’s 2020 targets :

  • Additional RM7,000 income per annum for 350,000 Citizens from digital income

  • Enabling e-payment services for SMEs and microenterprises
    • The project successfully activated 30,000 merchant outlet points
  • Develop on demand, customised online education :
    • As of December 2012, 520  local books have been digitised from local publishers, such as literature from the National Library and Pelangi Publisher
  • Microsourcing to generate income for the B40
    • 1,147 members of the B40 community trained for microwork
    • 300 members of the B40 community are now generating additional income through digital means
    • Value of Income to B40 workers so far : RM100,000
  • Facilitating societal upliftment
    • Number of B40 profiled : 400,000
    • Number of B40 qualified and channelled to specific programmes : 100,000
    • Number of volunteers trained : 2,000

    • Introduced the Pilot Project in Pahang and seeing the following progress

      • 350 volunteers trained (to reach 1,000 by Oct 2013)
      • Community English Classes with RM600 k worth of books impacting 10 libraries and 1,000 B40
      • Cancer Awareness with Mobile Mammogramme impacting 2,000 B40
      • Child Safety Awareness (in collaboration with PDRM Pahang) impacting 10 schools and 4,000 children
      • Domestic Management services – training and income opportunities – 50 single mothers helped
      • Community Cycling Project in Bera – 500 B40 members impacted

    • Engaged Intel and National Instruments as Technology Partners
    • 5 embedded systems projects funded so far and are under the development stage.  The approved projects are:
      • Syntronic Malaysia Sdn Bhd – electric vehicle infrastructure charging solution
      • Select-TV Solutions Sdn Bhd – digital set-top-box
      • MDT Innovations Sdn Bhd – embedded wireless sensor system for ubiquitous monitoring for the retail sector
      • Archtron R&D Sdn Bhd – digital smart home and security system
      • 3ntity Sdn Bhd – digital signage kiosk
  • Develop a trusted mobile digital wallet system
    • Trusted Mobile Digital Wallet System Framework developed in Feb 2012
    • Commercial trial of Mobile Money NFC Wallet platform conducted in March 2012 and successfully concluded in Jun 2012
    • Syndication with stakeholders completed
