Windows 7 has overtaken the decade old Windows XP, according to the latest operating system market share data from Net Applications. The latest data also shows that Apple’s Mac OS X has overtaken Windows Vista, if all versions of Mac OS X are combined.
As of August, Windows 7 market share currently stands at 42.76 percent while Windows XP market share have been declining over the year and currently stands at 42.52%.
According to ZDNet, Netmarketshare’s numbers are balanced to reflect PC use in Asia, including China, where pirate copies of XP are in widespread use. Windows 7 overtook Windows XP a long time ago on many individual websites and on other web-based trackers.
Microsoft has been telling users to upgrade from Windows XP. Mainstream Support for XP ended in 2009 together with support for Internet Explorer 6. Windows XP’s Extended Support will end on April 8, 2014.
